HAND SIGNALS
Language is a system of signs created through acts of speech, but that doesn’t mean that that our mouths are doing all the talking. The body communicates with eloquence-- especially the hands, those miraculous makers/ breakers, recorders/ dissemblers. I have thought about them quite a lot: the ways in which they tell stories in paintings (if you have been schooled in the secrets of such readings), form alphabets (either literally or figuratively) and even stand in for actors on a stage, much like the cast of characters that wanders through my continually-unraveling memories. The objects and images in this section are drawn from several bodies of work, though many were first shown in an exhibition titled (unsurprisingly) Hand Signals.
